What’s the difference between a bookkeeper and an accountant?

It’s important to know that bookkeepers are not accountants, although many people confuse the two or think it’s the same job. 

Both are very important jobs and do a great deal to help business owners, but they are not the same.

Accountants are required to have a bachelor’s degree, and many of them complete additional coursework or certifications. Their training is why they are responsible for providing financial analysis and insights.

The work a bookkeeper does may be passed onto an accountant for tax purposes or to help a business owner make larger financial decisions.

Also, you have probably seen the title CPA – that stands for Certified Public Accountant. This is an accounting professional who has completed licensing standards for their state. This is not the case for bookkeepers.

As an online bookkeeper, you can typically work from wherever. I’ve met people while traveling who work as online bookkeepers as a way to work while traveling – it’s just that flexible!

All of the most popular bookkeeping software that you would use is all online, and most companies keep digital copies of financial documents you would need to access online as well, like receipts and payroll.

 

What does an online bookkeeper do? 

As a bookkeeper, you may be completing tasks such as:

  • Recording financial transactions
  • Categorizing and organizing financial information, such as filing receipts
  • Producing financial statements
  • Bank statement reconciliation
  • Budget management
  • Creating financial reports
  • Handle invoices
  • Cash flow management
  • Manage payroll

And more. The online part simply comes from the fact that you are working remotely and not going into an office. 

But the exact tasks you do depend on what your clients or company is looking for.

 

How much do online bookkeepers make?

Pay for online bookkeepers varies just like the type of work they do varies.

This is because it depends on how many hours you put towards it each week (do you want to work part-time or full-time, for example), what you’re doing to grow your business, and more.

As an online bookkeeper, you may be able to earn around $40,000 or more each year. This is typically around 12-16 clients. Per hour pay may range anywhere from $60-$100/hour.

It’s not uncommon for a bookkeeper to make approximately $300 a month for one client, and that’s working around 4-5 hours a month total.

 

Can I be a bookkeeper without a degree? How do I become a virtual bookkeeper with no experience?

There are definitely online bookkeeping jobs with no experience needed, and you don’t need a degree to get started either.

That being said, you will need to learn how to do this job correctly, and one way is to take an online course. Yes, that means that you can learn how to become a bookkeeper with no experience.

The skills you may need as an online bookkeeper may include:

  • Organization skills – As a bookkeeper, you need strong organization skills to organize and categorize numbers. Organization skills are also a must when you are working with multiple clients.
  • Understand numbers – Now, you don’t need a degree in finance, but you should at least be comfortable with numbers and be willing to learn how to correctly do a company’s bookkeeping. Most bookkeepers use fairly simple math.
  • Attention to detail – As a bookkeeper, you will be dealing with a company’s financial details, which means that you need to be able to pay good attention to all of the different details.

Many business owners have no idea how to track their finances, and this is where a virtual bookkeeper comes in!

As an online bookkeeper, you may be working directly for a company full-time, or you may have many smaller part-time clients. It simply depends on what type of business you want to run, or if you want to be a full-time bookkeeping employee for a company.

 

What companies hire online bookkeepers? 

There are many different places to start when it comes to finding online bookkeeping jobs. These include:

  1. Fiverr – For freelance bookkeeping jobs, Fiverr.com can be a place to start for entry level bookkeeping jobs. You would be posting your bookkeeping services on this website, sort of like an advertisement for your bookkeeping business.
  2. UpWork – With UpWork, you can find beginner bookkeeping jobs. At the time of writing this post, they had 954 bookkeeping jobs posted on UpWork.
  3. Flexjobs – Flexjobs.com lists bookkeeping jobs. I did a quick search and found 11 pages full of different bookkeeping jobs that they have listed.
  4. Craigslist – By searching available jobs and gigs, you may find bookkeeping jobs. Local businesses need bookkeepers too!
  5. Indeed – Indeed lists virtual bookkeeper jobs, and even goes a little more in-depth and lists the salary range as well.
  6. Ziprecruiter – Ziprecruiter has 13,334 online bookkeeper jobs currently posted on their website.
  7. Belay Solutions – Belay Solutions hires for remote positions, such as bookkeepers. Job duties include paying client’s bills, bank statement reconciliation, budget management, and more.
  8. Accounting Prose – This is a bookkeeping and payroll company that hires virtual bookkeepers.
  9. Intuit – Intuit (Quickbooks) hires Quickbooks Live Bookkeepers to help small businesses manage their finances. The jobs they offer are typically around 20 to 40 hours each week.
  10. Accounting Department – This is a website that hires bookkeepers as full-time W2 workers, with benefits. The company is virtual, but they ask that you live in the United States.
  11. Bookminders – Bookminders hires part-time work from home bookkeepers. You may be working for small business or non-profit companies. They do require a bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years of experience in the finance field. Plus, while it is a remote position, you do need to live within 45 miles of a local Bookminders’ office (so that you can attend training and client meetings). Current offices are located in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Baltimore, King of Prussia, Cherry Hill, Annapolis, D.C., and Austin.
  12. Backyard Bookkeeper – Backyard Bookkeeper hires bookkeepers for anywhere from 10 to 30 hours a week (it’s up to you). You can work from your home, but you may have to visit clients occasionally as well. This is a part-time bookkeeping position that pays around $16 to $24 per hour. You do need to be a resident of Utah.
  13. Guru – This is a job board where you can list your bookkeeping services.
  14. Remote.co – This website lists remote bookkeeping jobs from individual companies or with consulting firms.

I started Making Sense of Cents entirely as a hobby, and I had no idea that blogs could make money or that this could turn into my full-time job. I actually didn’t even understand what a blog was or how it worked.

Eventually, I learned that you could make money blogging, and because it sounded like a fun way to make extra money, I tried my hardest to make it happen.

The more time I spent on my blog, the more I wanted to pursue making money with it. But honestly, I never had plans of it turning into my full-time career.

When I started, I was simply looking for something to help me pay off my student loans and stop living paycheck to paycheck.

I came to realize that blogging was exactly what I wanted to do with my life and that it was possible for me to make a full-time income from it.

As soon as I committed to working as hard at my blog as I did my full-time job, everything just grew crazily from there!

1. I switched to self-hosted WordPress and bought a domain name

I know that as a person new to blogging, hearing “self-hosted blog and owning your domain name” probably sounds like a foreign language, but I promise to explain it to you in a minute.

For almost my full first year of blogging, I didn’t own my domain name or have a self-hosted site.

This was a huge mistake.

Not being self-hosted or having a domain name meant that I had no control over my blog. At that time, Google was regularly shutting down blogs like that for no reason at all.

And then it happened to me. My blog was accidentally turned off by Google. Yes, turned off! Luckily, I was able to beg for it back after I pointed out their glitch, but I knew I didn’t want it to happen again.

Once it was back up, I switched to self-hosted WordPress as quickly as I could.

I highly recommend that you start a self-hosted blog and own your blog’s domain name if you want to make money with your blog.

Luckily, neither of these things are difficult or cost much money.

I show you exactly how to start a self-hosted blog and purchase your domain name in my tutorial How To Start A WordPress Blog On Bluehost. Thankfully, it is extremely affordable to do it this way, and once you complete these easy steps – you are done!

I recommend that you start on self-hosted WordPress (this tutorial will help you start your blog the correct way). I cannot say this enough, but I do not recommend Blogger or WordPress.com if you want to start a blogging business (you want the self-hosted version, which is WordPress.org – confusing, I know). Buying that $10 domain name from Blogger or GoDaddy does not mean you are self-hosted either.

To recap, the positives of being self-hosted and owning your domain include:

  • You will have complete control over your blog.
  • You own your blog, and it can’t be deleted for any reason.
  • You have many different options when it comes to tools and plugins that you can use to grow your blog.
  • You will own your domain name, which is something you definitely need!

 

2. I started an email list

I waited years to start an email list, and I still can’t believe that I waited so long and wasted so much time.

I think I was simply overwhelmed with the thought of starting one because it seemed too difficult. I was already busy with work and side hustles, and I felt like there was too much to learn to get started with an email list.

Little did I know that starting my list early would have helped me make more money and be less stressed.

When I finally jumped in, starting an email list wasn’t nearly as difficult as I thought.

I use Convertkit and have been for many years now. They have a free plan to get you started if you are new to blogging.

Once I started my email list, I was able to grow my blog in terms of both income as well as readership. This is because I am able to help my readers even more by sharing additional resources, and I can attract new readers with lead magnets and opt-in forms on my blog.

To have a successful blog, I highly recommend that you have an email list. Whether you are brand new or if you’ve been blogging for years, an email list is a must for pretty much any blogger or business owner.

Here is why I think you need an email list right away:

  • Your newsletter is all yours. With social media, unfortunately, you don’t have complete control over what’s going on. But with an email list, you have control and your readers’ undivided attention! You don’t have to worry about algorithms not displaying your content to readers, and this is because they are your email subscribers. You aren’t fighting with anyone else to have them see your content.
  • You can earn an income with your email list. I believe that email newsletters are the best way to promote products and services. Your email subscribers signed up to hear what you have to write about, so you clearly have their full attention. Your email list, over any other promotional strategy, will almost always lead to more income and sales. In fact, research has shown that for every $1 you spend on your list, you can have a $36 return on that investment.
  • Your email subscribers are loyal to you. If someone is allowing you to show up in their inbox whenever you want, then they probably trust what you have to say and enjoy listening to you. 
  • Email is a great way to deliver other forms of content. With Convertkit, I am also able to easily create free email courses and resources that are automatically sent to my subscribers. Once a reader signs up, Convertkit sends out all the information they need in whatever time frame I choose to deliver the content.

 

3. I added affiliate marketing to my blog

I waited a few years to start affiliate marketing because I thought you had to have a huge following or be lucky in order to make money blogging with affiliate marketing.

But, I was completely wrong.

I earn most of my monthly income with affiliate marketing, and it’s also my favorite way to monetize a blog.

I enjoy affiliate marketing because it is quite easy to share products and services on your blog. After all, you are already writing about different subjects related to your topic, so I’m sure you’re writing about products and services that will naturally fit with your blog’s niche.

Plus, affiliate marketing can be a somewhat passive income source because you can create a blog post and possibly earn money from that same blog post for years. In fact, there are many blog posts that still earn me income over 5 years later. See, even though a blog post may be older, I am still constantly driving traffic to it and readers are still purchasing through the affiliate links in that article.

So, what is affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing is a blog monetization method where you share a link to a product or service with your readers and earn income when followers make a purchase through your special link. 

You might earn a percentage of the sale or a flat rate for each person who signs up or makes a purchase through your affiliate link.

Here are some quick tips so that you can make affiliate income on your blog:

  • Write about your real opinion on products and companies. You should always be honest with your reviews. If there is something you don’t like about a product, either don’t be an affiliate for the company or do mention the negatives in your review. Whenever I write a review or talk about a product, I try to do research on negative reviews to see what real users think.
  • Ask for a raise. If you are doing well with a particular affiliate program, ask for a commission increase.
  • Build a relationship with your affiliate manager. Your affiliate manager can give your readers valuable coupons, increase your commissions, offer bonuses, and more.
  • Don’t go overboard. There is no need to include an affiliate link 100 times in your content. You can simply include your affiliate links at the beginning, middle, and end, and readers will notice them. Perhaps bold it or find another way for it to stand out as well, like with a call-to-action box.

4. I write content well in advance

When I first started this blog, I was writing content and publishing it either the same day or the next day.

It was so stressful writing and publishing blog posts this way.

It was tiring because I knew I had to publish content to grow my blog, but it was exhausting writing a post every single day.

Eventually, I remembered reading about a blogger who said that she liked to be around 6 months or more ahead in content.

Ever since then, I have always strived to be around 1-2 months ahead of schedule. Currently, I am several months ahead in content and it feels amazing! I’ve also reduced the number of posts I publish each week so I can keep up with a realistic schedule that works for me – this has also helped me get ahead.

There are many benefits to writing content in advance, such as:

  • Not feeling like you’re running out of blog post ideas.
  • No rushing the day or week before to try and figure out something good to write about.
  • You only have to write when you’re in the mood to write. When I’m in the writing mood, I write much faster and enjoy the writing process.
  • Having a huge amount of content written and done, of course!

I tend to batch write content, which means I may write a lot of content one week, and then I can go several weeks or even months without writing anything.

This way, I can focus on other areas of my blogging business and have a better work-life balance.

 

5. I write about topics that I’m interested in

Whenever I write something on Making Sense of Cents, I always make sure that I am interested in the topic. After all, if I’m not interested in it, then my readers probably aren’t either.

While this seems like an obvious thing to do, I know of quite a few bloggers that do not enjoy what they are writing about.

This just sounds like writing and blogging would feel like a chore.

Instead, I try to keep things interesting because it makes what I do even more enjoyable.

Plus, the blog posts that you write and share with your audience are very important to running a successful blog. Your blog posts are what attract readers to your website, have them subscribe to your newsletter, and bring in income.

Here is my advice on how to write high-quality and interesting blog posts:

  • Find a topic to write about. Figure out exactly what it is that you’d like to write about and why you think the content is important. Being passionate about a subject will give you the motivation to write content that people will want to read. Just think about it: If you don’t enjoy writing your content, then why should you expect someone else to want to read it?
  • Ask your audience what they want you to write about. I receive many questions from readers, and I often like to turn them into full blog posts. I do this because it’s usually difficult to answer a question in a short email. Plus, if one person has the question, then there are probably many others who want to ask the same thing.
  • Spend time researching your posts. If a topic that you are writing about needs to be researched, make sure you are thorough. This may include looking up statistics, researching the topic from reputable sources, and more.
  • Be personal. For blogs where you are sharing your personal story, then be personal! Share your story and write like a real person talking to a friend.
  • Write longer content that is helpful. Sure, some great content may only be a few hundred words, but to be as helpful as possible, long content is usually the best. That’s because you can be much more thorough in how you discuss a topic. The blog posts that I write are usually over 2,000 words, and this article is over 4,500 words. Now, you don’t want to just write a lot of fluff content in order to get more words in – you want to actually be helpful!
  • Proofread and reread your blog posts before you publish them. I used to read my blog posts 10 times or more before I would publish them. Thankfully, now I have an editor. I simply email my blog posts to her, and I no longer drive myself crazy with editing, haha.
  • Keep a list of topics to write about. This one is especially helpful for me. I have a very long list on my laptop of things that I would like to write about. This way, I can choose what is best for me that day and always have content ideas.

The point is that you have to write good, thoughtful content that you’re excited to share with your readers.

6. I enjoy talking to readers and helping them

I have been blogging for many years, and one of the things I enjoy so much about blogging is helping my readers.

I like responding to comments, messages, and emails, and helping readers as much as I can.

I believe this has helped me over the years because it keeps me motivated to write helpful content, engage with readers, be more personable, and more.

Blogging can be so personal, and I share a lot of my life with my readers. So it’s only natural that I’d want to get to know and help them on a personal level. 

 

7. I am always learning

Blogging is a never ending learning process.

And, in this section, I’m talking about learning how to grow your blog by either taking courses or learning more through different types of resources. I also can’t forget learning through trial and error.

I have learned a LOT over the years through trial and error, and while it may take a little longer, I do think that it is a great way to start for anyone on a budget.

Blogging is constantly evolving, and things are always changing. What I was doing 10 years ago when I started this blog most likely wouldn’t help me today.

The way you share your blog, SEO, writing content, plugins, and so much more have all changed over the years. You might try a strategy that works for another blogger and find it doesn’t work for you. That will eventually lead you to something that does work, but it would never happen if you weren’t willing to try and possibly fail.

If you’re looking for strategies to try, there are so many resources online – other blog posts, courses, podcasts, ebooks, and more. I am constantly paying attention to what’s out there and learning more because that’s how I’ve been successful so far. 

Blogging is one business where you have to be ready to try new things. As I said, it’s constantly evolving, and that’s what keeps it excited, but you have to be willing to learn.

 

8. I see the value in making connections and helping others

Networking and making friends with other bloggers is so very helpful.

Networking as a blogger can mean something like:

  • Attending blogging conferences and meetups
  • Sharing other blogger’s content on social media
  • Commenting on other blogger’s content and social media posts
  • Making friends with bloggers

Some bloggers don’t do any of these things and see other bloggers only as competition. I don’t believe this is the correct way to approach blogging, and you can hold yourself back if you approach it like that.

Networking is important because it can help you enjoy blogging (friends are nice to have, right?!), you can learn new things about blogging from your network (such as how to make money blogging and how to grow a blog), make valuable connections, and more.

If it weren’t for networking, I never would have made my first $100 blogging. I actually made my first dollars blogging because another blogger introduced me to an advertiser who then placed an advertisement on Making Sense of Cents. If I never would have had her as a friend, I never would have had this connection!

I have learned a lot about blogging from the blogging community, and it has helped me improve Making Sense of Cents greatly.

 

9. I put in the time

Sadly, there are some people who don’t fully understand blogging, create a blog, and then are upset when they don’t see a bunch of money roll in after their first week.

In fact, the average new blogger will quit only 6 months in because they’re not seeing the results that they want.

However, 6 months is nowhere near enough time to build a successful blog.

It is, however, enough time to build the foundation for a successful blog.

It actually took me 6 months to make my first $100. If I would have quit back then, that would have been a huge mistake for me.

I have spent many hours blogging, and during the first year I barely made any money, but putting in that work is what laid the groundwork for where my site is today. And remember, I’ve earned over $5,000,000 since starting.

It is not easy to start a blog – it will be completely brand new to you and will take a lot of time. It is not a get-rich-quick scheme!

As a blogger, you will have to do things such as:

  • Create a blog and design it
  • Start social media accounts
  • Write interesting content
  • Share your blog to grow your readership
  • Find ways to make money with your blog

And so much more.

Even when I was just a new blogger and had no plans of making money blogging, I was still spending well over 10 hours a week on Making Sense of Cents.

When I was working my full-time day job and earning an income from my blog, I was working around 40-50 hours a week on my blog on top of my day job!

Now that I blog full-time, my hours vary. Some months I hardly work, and there are other months that I may work 100 hours a week.

It’s not easy, and there’s always something that needs to be done.

But I absolutely love blogging, which makes the hard work a little less tough.

 

10. I realize that sharing your blog is important

Many people write blog posts and hope that the traffic will come – but that simply isn’t the case!

Some people say that you should spend 20% of your time writing content and 80% sharing your blog and trying to grow it.

While I don’t think there’s an exact science to it, I do think it’s important to remember that you need to spend a lot of time sharing your content and your blog.

You could have written the best thing in the world, but if you don’t share it then no one will ever be able to find it.

As a blogger, you need to find ways to attract a readership to your blog and get people to read your blog posts.

No, you don’t need millions and millions of page views to earn a good living from your blog. In fact, I know some bloggers who receive 500,000 monthly page views yet make less money than those with 50,000 monthly page views.

Every website is different, but once you learn what your audience wants, you can start to really make money blogging, regardless of how many page views you receive.

Some ways to grow your page views and find new readers include:

  • Write high-quality and interesting blog posts. Your blog posts should always be high-quality and helpful so that your readers will want to continually come back and read more.
  • Be active on social media. Social media can be a great way to grow a blog, such as through TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, Twitter, and Facebook.
  • Publish new blog posts consistently and regularly. For most blogs, you should publish content at least once a week. Readers may forget about you if you go for weeks or months at a time without a blog post. 
  • Guest post on other blogs. Guest posting is when you write a blog post for another blog. This can be a great way for new readers to find you.
  • Brainstorm better titles for your blog posts. The first thing potential readers will see before they click to read a blog post is the title that you have chosen. Due to that, choosing an eye-catching title is so very important! Here’s a free tool I like to use: CoSchedule’s Headline tool.
  • Learn SEO strategies. SEO (search engine optimization) is important for most blogs out there. If you’re not sure what it is, an easy way to explain it is to think about when you search for something on Google. You’re more likely to click on one of the first websites that your search brings you to. This is due to SEO, and it can be a great way for readers to find your blog.

The above is a very brief summary of how to grow a blog, and I realize that. It would be very difficult to list everything that you need to know, and there are full courses on each of the subjects above.

What is a virtual assistant?

Before we go any further, I want to make sure you understand exactly what it means to be a virtual assistant.

A virtual assistant is someone who works for a person, company, or business owner doing administrative and business tasks to help the business run smoothly. Think of VAs as the online version of an in-person assistant. You work online from home rather than inside someone’s physical business.

As a virtual assistant, you may be able to set your own hours and work a flexible schedule, or you may be working a set schedule. I find that most virtual assistant jobs have flexible hours, though. 

Because of the flexibility, I know virtual assistants who live in completely different time zones or countries from where their clients live.

In addition to the flexibility, there are many positives of becoming a virtual assistant, such as:

  • Making money 
  • The possibility of a flexible schedule
  • Being able to work from home
  • Choosing your own clients
  • Being your own boss

Those are just a few of the benefits.

How much can a virtual assistant earn?

The amount of money you can make as a virtual assistant depends on many factors, such as your specialty, how many hours you’re working, the types of clients you work for, and more.

Usually, you can start out earning at least $15 to $20 per hour, but sometimes you may be able to make double or triple that in the beginning. This just depends on the factors I just mentioned.

Full-time virtual assistants with a few years of experience and a steady client base may be able to earn over $10,000 a month.

A virtual assistant can do so many different things – it simply depends on what your client or company requires of you.

Common virtual assistant tasks include:

  • Managing social media accounts for an online business owner, company, or influencer
  • Formatting and editing content

  • Email inbox management, which may include replying to emails, sending out regular emails or newsletters, helping customers or clients, and more
  • Organizing events and event planning
  • Communicating with clients and/or customers
  • Assisting with ordered equipment or supplies
  • Calendar management
  • Data entry
  • Website management
  • Creating or assisting with slideshows or presentations
  • Creating and sending invoices
  • Managing logistics
  • Coordinating and handling Zoom calls and group chats
  • Conducting research
  • Accounting or bookkeeping
  • Moderating online forums by creating topics to discuss, responding to comments, and so on
  • Receptionist duties
  • Personal errands (such as buying gifts or planning travel)

Now, not all virtual assistants will do all of these tasks. Like I said, virtual assistant is a broad term for anyone who works online assisting a person or business. So, what you do for your clients will likely vary from what another virtual assistant does for their clients.

A podcast virtual assistant is a VA that specializes in helping with podcasts and assisting podcast hosts.

Podcasts are extremely popular right now, and it seems like everyone is starting a podcast.

There are over 2,000,000 podcasts, and that number continues to grow.

While the podcast host can record themselves, other tasks like editing and publication take time, so many podcasters outsource their work to freelance virtual assistants. Also, some podcasters may not know how to do those things, or they may choose to focus their time on other areas.

Some of the different services you may be responsible for as a podcast virtual assistant include:

  • Audio editing
  • Marketing and promotion
  • Publication
  • Distribution
  • Show note creation

There are many different places to start when it comes to finding virtual assistant jobs. These include:

  1. Fiverr – For freelance virtual assistant jobs, Fiverr.com can be a place to start for entry-level virtual assistant jobs.
  2. UpWork – With UpWork, you can find beginner virtual assistant jobs. At the time of writing this article, there were 8,788 virtual assistant jobs listed on UpWork.
  3. Contact bloggers to see if they need any virtual assistance. A simple email introducing yourself and how you can help can go a long way.
  4. Simply asking around in your network is another great way to see if anyone needs a virtual assistant. Many virtual assistants then grow their business through referrals.
  5. Create a personal virtual assistant website that displays your services, testimonials, and so on. Then, be sure to share this link so that people can find you. It would be helpful to place it in easy-to-find places, such as on your Instagram or Facebook profile.
  6. Craigslist – By searching available jobs and gigs, you may find virtual assistant jobs.
  7. Facebook groups – Many people look for virtual assistants on Facebook, so this can be a great place to search and market your services. This may include joining blogging-related Facebook groups, sharing your virtual assistant website on your Facebook page and seeing if anyone needs a virtual assistant, and more.
  8. Freelancer – Freelancer.com posts freelance virtual assistant jobs, similar to how UpWork does. I did a quick search and I found many virtual assistant jobs all over the world.

Who hires virtual assistants?

There are many companies and people who hire virtual assistants. You may be working for:

  • A website owner or blogger
  • Real estate agent, broker, real estate firms
  • IT companies
  • Marketing companies
  • Law firms
  • Business startups

  • Stores, such as clothing stores, boutiques, and everything else
  • Healthcare companies
  • Podcast hosts

And the list goes on and on and on.

Pretty much all industries have virtual assistants because all of them have work that can be done online.

 

How do I become a virtual assistant online?

Here is a broad view of how you can become a virtual assistant:

  1. Think about what kind of virtual assistant you want to be. You may want to look at some of the job boards mentioned above to see what type of virtual assistants are needed so that you can get an idea of what kind of tasks you want to offer. Or, you can think about the kinds of clients you’d like to work for and figure out what services they need.
  2. Determine your rate and pricing as a virtual assistant.
  3. Find virtual assistant jobs and apply for them. This may include marketing yourself and looking for referrals.
  4. Getting hired as a virtual assistant.
  5. Doing the work and getting paid!

Some virtual assistant jobs may be one-time positions, but most of them will be regular jobs that you work on either a daily or weekly basis. That means they can bring in a fairly consistent source of income.

 

Are virtual assistants in demand?

Yes, virtual assistants are in high demand. More and more businesses are run online or from home, which means that a lot of tasks can be completed online or from home as well.

I expect this to be a career field that just continues to grow well into the future.

 

What skills should a virtual assistant have?

As a virtual assistant, the most basic skills are knowing how to use a computer.

Depending on your client’s needs, you may need to know how to manage social media accounts, create slideshow presentations, how to create spreadsheets, and so on.

Other beneficial skills may include:

  • Good communication
  • Organizational skills
  • Being reliable (the company or person is paying you to complete your tasks, after all, and to make their life easier)

There are many skills you can pick up from other jobs that translate well into virtual assistant jobs. 

 

What do I need to become a virtual assistant?

As a virtual assistant, you will need a laptop or computer, fast internet connection, email, and phone.

Different jobs may have additional requirements. Some may want you to be familiar with WordPress, Excel, email service providers, bookkeeping software, etc.

How do I find virtual assistant jobs from home with no experience?

You probably do have experience doing something that’s required of virtual assistants. Areas like customer service, data entry, human resources, administrative support, and so on all require similar skills to what’s needed of virtual assistants.

Think about the skills you have and how you can translate them into finding your first virtual assistant jobs. It’s all about marketing yourself.

Then, I recommend looking at platforms like Fiverr or Upwork. You can also reach out to business owners you know and see if you can build referrals that way.

How to become an Airbnb experience host

1. Please give us a little background on yourself and how you got started with Airbnb experiences.

As a personal finance blogger at Studenomics, I’ve always researched new side hustles to test out and write about for my readers.

As time goes on, you realize that some side hustles are worth the effort while others aren’t. My goal is to figure out which side hustles are worth pursuing for those with limited time who are looking to make some money.

For some reason, I had the idea of bringing guests to cool coffee shops across the city. In 2018, I kept on discussing this idea with a friend who I often met for coffee. I was set on finding a way to get paid to drink coffee and to show people the cool coffee shops around Toronto.

I just wasn’t sure of how I would run such a concept. I had no clue how I would advertise, find guests, or even get paid. So I just put the idea on the backburner.

So then in 2019, I was in Costa Rica when an email popped up from Airbnb about activities that I should consider near me. I didn’t know what this was about so I looked into it. I ended up signing up for some scenery walk because it looked interesting and we were looking for something to do that evening. 

When I went on the actual experience, I realized that I was meeting some random dude (the experience host) who was just going to show us a popular trail (we were the only ones there with a tour guide).

I asked him how he ended up in my mailbox. He informed me that he applied to host an Airbnb Experience on the platform and that Airbnb took care of everything else. This made sense to me because the email that I received from Airbnb was professional and enticing. 

I couldn’t believe it. When I returned back to Toronto, I started researching to figure out how I could get listed on Airbnb. I eventually went through the application process and got approved to host my own experience (after getting denied the first time around) which would be a coffee crawl where I take guests to unique coffee shops around my community.

2. If you don’t mind sharing – how much do you earn as an Airbnb experience host?

You earn 80% of the experience and the price depends on how much you charge.

When I first started, I had a low introductory rate to attract guests so that I could get better at hosting. I raised the prices as I improved my process and the experience became more popular. 

On a coffee tour, I charged anywhere from $25-30. I would make about $11/per person. If I had 10 people and two hours per day, I could earn a few hundred dollars.

Then you get tips. These aren’t as common with an Experience, but you still get some tips. This all adds up.

I haven’t started up yet because Canada had intense measures so I couldn’t give you a recent rate. My goal is to run coffee crawls across Toronto this summer. 

The goal is to charge a decent rate for your experience while keeping expenses low. 

So for example, photography tours work well because you only have to bring your camera. 

An experience is the perfect side hustle because you’re guaranteed to get paid every single time.

If you’re not sure how much money you could earn, the trick is to look up similar experiences near you to see what they’re charging. Then you want to run as many experiences as you can based on your schedule. The goal from there is to fill up every experience with 10 guests to maximize your earnings or to offer private tours at a higher rate.

3. What do you like about being an Airbnb experience host? 

The best part of being an experience host is that you’re in control of everything so you can be as creative as you want to be.

You can create your own experience, customize it, and be in control of the entire process. 

I was also happy with the work that Airbnb did to promote my experience when I first started.

For example, I had a friend visiting town reach out to me about hanging out. He booked an Airbnb unit for the weekend. Then a few days before the trip, he sent me a funny screenshot. Airbnb emailed him suggesting that he do my coffee crawl on Saturday morning. 

With Experiences, you don’t have to stress about doing all of the advertising. The app will promote for you and handle that end of the business. 

With many other side hustles, you essentially have to spend a lot of time on advertising and marketing. This can be a struggle for new entrepreneurs who are looking to just make some money on the side. 

Airbnb also does all of the other work for you (from collecting money to handling requests).

As an entrepreneur, you have to figure out how you’re going to make money and get paid. Airbnb handles all of that for you so that you have less to think about. You can focus on delivering the best possible tour for your guests.

I also like the fact that you can turn any hobby into a profitable business. I’ve attached various screenshots of images around the world to show you can turn any hobby into a side hustle (from hiking to yoga).

4. What is an Airbnb experience?

An experience is pretty much any activity that you can offer on the Airbnb platform.

Activities range from food tours to any other unique idea that you can come up with.

Here’s the official description of Airbnb Experiences: 

“Airbnb Experiences are in-person or online activities hosted by inspiring local experts. They go beyond typical tours or classes by immersing guests in a Host’s unique world.”

In other words, an Airbnb Experience is essentially any activity that can be offered as a thing to do. There are people offering astronomy tours, hikes up to Hollywood sign, and the opportunity to forge a knife from a horseshoe. More on ideas later.

5. How do Airbnb experiences work?

Airbnb Experiences depend on what kind of activity you plan on offering.

Here’s a general overview of the process…

For guests:

Guests on the Airbnb platform get a list of things to do when they book a unit or look up a town. Your goal is to get enough reviews so that you always pop up when someone’s in your town or near you. 

For hosts:

You think of an experience, then you apply and wait to get approved. Once you’re accepted, you have to schedule out dates in advance for guests to book. Then you deliver the experience to guests who book that specific date and time. 

I ensured that my experience information page was accurate and extremely thorough. You want to include everything from directions to the meeting place to what they should expect to do with a timeline. 

I would meet guests at a popular location (The Drake cafe– nothing to do with Drake). Then we would go through 3 coffee shops. We started off with Ethiopian coffee, then we walked through Queen West before arriving at an Armenian coffee shop where we had Turkish coffee, and then we finished off with coffee in the park. Every group had its own unique dynamic and no experiences were identical. 

6. What are some Airbnb experience ideas?

This is where things get interesting. 

Pretty much anything can be an experience. The categories range from sports to drinking to eating to history. 

I’ve noticed that tours tend to perform the best on the app. 

I had many guests start coffee crawls when they returned back home. We had coffee crawls in Barcelona, England, Montreal and Charlotte. 

Here are some popular experience ideas: 

  • Anything to do with a popular landmark.
  • Eating any kind of food.
  • The history of the area.
  • A mix of food and walking.

Here are some of the most unique experience ideas:

  • Eating fire seminar.
  • Tango classes in a coffee shop.
  • Being a mermaid for a day.
  • Bob Ross painting class.
  • Farm chores in the morning.
  • Running up the stairs like Rocky. 

Here are some common Airbnb experience ideas:

  • Food tour. We all want to eat the tasty local cuisine when we explore a new place.
  • Walking tour. We all want to see the popular attractions. 
  • Photography tour. We all want the perfect photo for Instagram. 

Can’t think of anything unique? Don’t worry. You can keep it simple. Your town may need a European food tour.

For the sake of this interview, I looked up a few popular places.

Here are some of the top experiences in major cities. 

  • New York City: Walk and eat, food tour, gangster tour, explore Brooklyn street art.
  • Denver: All kinds of hiking tours, astronomy tour, downtown pub crawls, hike the tallest peak, and even axe throwing.
  • Orlando: Paddleboard adventure, painting with a view, farm chores, and all kinds of hikes.
  • Dallas: JFK assassination tour, sightseeing, yoga in the park
  • Los Angeles: Hollywood sign hike, surf lessons, and anything to do with hiking.

Type in the city name and you’ll find unique experiences in every city across the globe. 

7. How much do Airbnb experience hosts make?

How much you make will depend on how much you charge and how many guests you get per experience. 

This is where it all comes down to value.

The more unique your experience is, the more that you can charge.

The goal is to have a decent profit margin with a sold-out experience. I found that my weekend crawls had up to 10 guests. So I could’ve made over $100. Then you got tips sometimes. 

Here’s how you can maximize your earnings with Airbnb Experiences:

  • Run multiple experiences. I’ve applied to host multiple different coffee shops. You can have many experiences in the same town.
  • Hire a co-host. You can run multiple experiences simultaneously by hiring a co-host to work with you.
  • Form partnerships. You can form business partnerships with any potential partners (this will depend on the activity).

8. What percentage does Airbnb take for experiences?

They take 20%. This seems like a fair number because they provide the platform, handle the advertising, and collect the money for you. You can focus on delivering the best possible experience.

There are some people who lead users to their Instagram page where they offer private tours. 

9. I’ve been hearing a lot about virtual Airbnb experiences. What is a virtual Airbnb experience?

This is an experience that you offer over Zoom.

For a virtual experience to work, you have to think of an interactive idea that can be done through your laptop and can be enjoyed by anyone around the world. 

I met a host who does tarot card reading and her experience took off during the pandemic. She did tarot card reading sessions all day from her living room during the lockdown.

I met another gentleman who plays piano in his living room. He puts on concerts in his living room for guests around the world.

Many Olympic athletes were also offering experiences during lockdowns where they shared mindset tips.

Cooking experiences are also popular because people are looking to sample food from around the world.

For the sake of transparency, I wasn’t able to convince Airbnb that my coffee crawl could be done over Zoom. It turns out that coffee drinking doesn’t translate as well to the virtual world.

With virtual experiences, Airbnb looks for the following:

  • Expertise.
  • Participation.
  • Easy to do.
  • Technical quality.

If you could brainstorm something that you could do from home, you could get paid to sit on the couch.

10. Are there Airbnb experience host requirements? For example, do you have to be an expert or have a degree?

This is where things get a bit confusing. You kind of have to sell yourself on what makes you a good host. Airbnb will ask about your credentials and anything that could make you think that you’re right for this.

The first time that I applied for the coffee crawl I was actually denied. I realized that I didn’t sell myself enough. I didn’t clearly display that I knew what I was talking about.

Here’s how you can prove that you’re an expert on a topic:

  • Show off your social media handles if you discuss this subject at all.
  • Share any accomplishments that you have in the field. 
  • Talk about your history in this field. 
  • Clearly explain why you’re fit to host this experience.
  • Share anything that proves you know what you’re talking about. 

The good news is that you’re likely going to start an experience in something that you’re familiar with so it should be easy to prove that you’re an expert or that you at least know what you’re doing. 

I helped a reader get approved for a history tour by having them share their Instagram profile where they discussed the entire history of the area already. Airbnb just wants to know that you’re not clueless about the topic. 

Here’s what will help you get approved:

  1. A clear plan for the experience. How long will the experience be? What will the guest do? 
  2. Proof that you understand the topic. What proof do you have that you know about this topic?

Good luck with getting approved. 

11. Can you list the steps needed to get started as an Airbnb experience host?

The most important thing is to get your experience approved on the Airbnb platform. You have to fill out the application on the Airbnb platform for approval. 

This can seem intimidating at first, but I’ve managed to fill it out in less than 15 minutes. 

You’re going to need the following information to apply:

  • Basic details about your experience.
  • The theme of the experience.
  • Where you’re going to start.
  • What you’re going to do.
  • What makes you qualified to do this?
  • What guests need to know about the experience. 

I have applied for many experiences during the last few years. The questions may change depending on the level of interaction of the activity. 

When you go to apply, you’re going to be asked a variety of questions ranging from the general theme of the experience to 

Your goal is to perfect the application process. So here’s what you should do:

  • Do a run-through of the experience.
  • Get some quality pictures. 

When you apply, your goal is to make it look like you’ve thought this experience through. Airbnb doesn’t want you to wing it or to rip people off by not providing a good enough activity. 

The good news is if you get denied, you’ll be given feedback. So you can modify your application and apply multiple times until you get approved. 

You can also pause your application if you need a break. I started working on an application in the last few days and Airbnb sent me an email with helpful tips. The email offered to help me with the description, with finding the perfect photos, and with optimizing the perfect idea. 

12. Are there any other tips that you have for someone who wants to try to become an Airbnb experience host? 

I would recommend turning a unique passion into a profitable hobby. 

This means that you can take any unique idea that you have and try to go all-in on it as an activity on the Airbnb platform.

For example, these are some of the most unique ideas out there: 

  • Eating fire.
  • Dressing up as a mermaid.
  • Goat yoga.
  • Astronomy tour.

The Airbnb team often recommends that you think of something unique. They specifically state this frequently in the marketing material:

We’re looking for experiences that give guests access to special places or communities, or unique activities that guests wouldn’t be able to do on their own.”

Airbnb goes on to mention that they’re looking for a, ”well-informed enthusiast.”

What this means is that there’s nothing off-limits and that being passionate about a topic is a qualification. 

I would also suggest that you try out a similar activity near you first to go through the process. The experience begins the moment that the person signs up. You want to ensure that they have all of the information that they need. Then I would send a welcome message (you should save a few of these templates).

13. Can you tell me more about the resource you offer?

Here are websites to check out if you’re interested in book review opportunities:

  • Online Book Club – With OnlineBookClub.org, you are only paid with a book (no cash). For all books after that, you will be eligible to be paid for the book review opportunities, plus the books will always be free. With this website, you can get paid around $5 to $60 for each book that you review.
  • Kirkus – Kirkus Media is looking for book reviewers of English and Spanish language books. They need reviews that are about 350 words long, and they are due two weeks after you are assigned to read a book.
  • UpWork – With UpWork, you would need to create your own profile and make a listing as a book reviewer. This way, clients and authors can find you and hire you directly to read their book and review it. Plus, as a freelance book reviewer on UpWork, you can set your own pricing and decide which clients you want to work with.
  • The US Review of Books – This website uses freelance writers to review books and write reviews that range from 250 to 300 words long. They are looking for reviews that are summaries that reveal insights about the book.
  • Reedsy – With Reedsy, you can review hundreds of different books before they are published and earn money at the same time. Authors submit their books to Reedsy, specifically to be reviewed by book reviewers. You then get paid by readers (those who buy a book) as a tip for the review. These tips can be $1, $3, or $5.
  • Booklist – Booklist is looking for freelance book reviews that are around 150 to 175 words long that describe the plot, suggest an ideal audience, and more. Booklist pays $15 for each book review, and you are paid once the review has been published.
  • BookBrowse – On BookBrowse, you can apply to become a book reviewer. You may get paid to read books for young adults, nonfiction, or fiction ones. 
  • Women’s Review of Books – The Women’s Review of Books (Wellesley Centers for Women) is a print publication that pays people to review books.

If you’re wondering how to read books and get paid, becoming a book reviewer is a great place to start.

So, you can find proofreading jobs for authors who are self-publishing books, all the way to large book publishers.

Online proofreading jobs are in demand, and it is a flexible and detail-orientated work-from-home job. All you need to work as a proofreader is a laptop or tablet, an internet connection, and the ability to spot mistakes.

If you want to get a career out of reading books, a proofreader is a great option if you’re good at spotting errors.

Yes, you can get paid to read books as a voice-over actor.

So, if you like to read books, you can actually get paid to read books aloud!

Audiobooks are extremely popular right now, and becoming a narrator can be a fun job.

A voice-over actor is the person you hear but rarely see in audiobooks, YouTube videos, radio ads, explainer videos, corporate narration, documentaries, TV commercials, video games, movies, and cartoons.

In 2014, my friend Carrie replaced her salaried day job to become a full-time voice-over actor. People are constantly asking her how she got her start and how they can too.

So, she created a six-week online class, and it sold out. Several of her students booked voice acting jobs before the class was even over!

With a book review blog, you would be reviewing books that are of interest to you or related to your blog topic.

Then, you could make money in many ways, including by placing affiliate links to Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other online stores for the books you’re reading. Some bloggers may share their thoughts about books they’ve read, host online discussions, or use books to help readers with different topics.

If you’re unfamiliar with affiliate marketing, it’s my favorite way to make money blogging. 

Here’s how affiliate marketing works:

  • Affiliates are people or businesses who are paid to promote a product or service.
  • When you become an affiliate, you are given special links to use when you promote something for a company. The links allow companies to track where the sale comes from.
  • Then, you place those links on your website, social media accounts, etc. in the hopes that someone will buy something through your link.
  • When someone makes a purchase through your unique affiliate link, the company knows where the customer came from and pays you a commission.

An example is the Amazon affiliate program, which is perfect if you want to start a blog about books. Amazon gives you special links, and you can share a link to a specific book on your website or blog and encourage people to purchase the book through your affiliate link. 

Amazon and other companies want quality affiliates under their belt because they want all the help they can get to promote the products and services they are selling. If you get someone to purchase a book through your link, the company pays you for sharing the link.

A book review blog can be a great way to get paid to read books if you want something flexible that can pay very well over time.

Another possibility if you know another language, is getting paid to proofread or edit translated books to make sure they read well.

There are lots of places to can find book translation jobs, including:

  • UpWork – With UpWork, you simply create a free profile, apply for jobs, and then you can get paid. UpWork charges services fees when you invoice your clients, but it is free to join.
  • Babelcube – Babelcube is a website that sends freelance translation projects to you. You select which books you translate, translate them to one of more than 15 different languages, and partner with published authors.
  • Guru – Guru is a website that lists freelance writing and translation jobs. This platform focuses mainly on highly skilled freelancers.
  • Indeed – Indeed has been around since 2004, and it is one of the longest-running job listing websites. Indeed lists jobs that they find from job boards, staffing firms, company websites, and more.
  • FlexJobs – FlexJobs is one of the most popular websites to use to find remote jobs and work-from-home opportunities. It costs to join FlexJobs, but there are lots of features to sort and find jobs, so it might be worth the cost to you. 
  • Today Translations – This is a website that is looking for translators to freelance for them.
  • Fiverr – Fiverr is an online marketplace where you can find freelance jobs all over the world. You can list your translation services and pricing right on this platform.
  • Ulatus – Ulatus is a website that provides translation services, which means that they need translators! They have over 200,000 clients worldwide with over 3000 language experts.
  • Creating your own website. I am always a fan of having your own website so that clients can find you.

As you can see, if you want to know how to make money reading books, there are lots of options if you want to put your translation skills to work.

 

6. Get paid to write books

I wanted to include a section on how to get paid to write books as well. If you enjoy reading books, perhaps writing a book is also something you would be interested in doing.

Technically, you would be reading your own book many times, so I think this counts!

Writing your own book is a great way to make money at home.

In fact, my friend Alyssa self-published her first book and has sold more than 13,000 copies so far. She has been able to earn a great passive income of over $200 a day from her book ($6,500 in one month alone!). Book readers can get paid varying amounts. It really depends on what type of book reading job you’re looking for and how many hours you put into each job.

Being a proofreader, voice-over actor reading for audiobooks, starting a book review blog, translating books, writing books, and finding a career in the industry can all become a full-time job with a full-time income.

You may get paid $5 for reviewing a book, or you may get paid hundreds or even thousands of dollars. It simply depends on what you are doing.

 

Can you make a living reading books?

Yes, you can make a living reading books. But, not all book reading jobs are full-time jobs.

Some may ask that you simply read a book and write a book review, and others may ask for an application, resume, plus writing samples.

 

Does Amazon pay you to read books?

Yes!

  4. Audition for the book you are interested in narrating for (this usually includes recording a few minutes of the manuscript)
  5. Accept an offer. Here you will decide on delivery dates and payment terms
  6. Start and finish recording for the audiobook.
  7. Get paid

Can I read books on YouTube and get paid?

Yes! You can make money on YouTube similar to how you make money blogging. So, you could share affiliate links to the books you read on YouTube.

There were many times when I would receive an easy $100 cash out from completing surveys in a one-month period. The work is really easy. It can all be done from home, on your own schedule and timeline, so it’s a win-win!

If you start signing up for lots of survey sites, your email inbox can start to get very cluttered. Since learning how to monetize a blog over 10 years ago, I have now earned over $5,000,000 from my site. This is still hard for me to believe, and I’m the one who’s lived it!

I started Making Sense of Cents around 10 years ago, entirely as a hobby.

In the beginning, all I was doing was tracking my own personal finance progress as I finished school and started paying off my student loans. Blogging was a very new concept to me at the time – I heard about it from a magazine – and people were just learning how to monetize blogs back in 2011.

Most bloggers started back then with display ads and sponsored posts, but the options have only increased. 

Because of all of the new ways to make money blogging, like affiliate income and selling your own products, you can make somewhat passive income as a blogger. 

Passive income is my favorite way to make money because it makes blogging even more flexible and something I can do as I work from home, travel, and work whenever I want. 

Blogging has changed my life for the better, and I’m now earning thousands of dollars a month doing something I love.

Learning how to monetize a blog takes work and time, but it’s 100% possible to do. I started earning money after just six months of blogging, and I didn’t even set out to make money when I created Making Sense of Cents. Just think of the potential if you start out knowing that making money blogging is possible!

Starting my blog is one of the best things I’ve ever done for my work, personal, and financial life. And, I urge anyone who is interested to start a blog and learn how to monetize it.

Today, I’m sharing how I built a blog that has earned me over $5,000,000 over the years and my tips so that you can create a successful blog that you enjoy.

How I earned my first income from blogging

Many of my readers have heard this story, but I love sharing it because I started out like many of you, except I had no idea that blogs could make money. When I started Making Sense in August of 2011, I simply wanted a way to keep track of my financial progress and meet others who had similar goals.

As I started getting to know other bloggers in the community, a blogger friend of mine connected me with an advertiser who was willing to pay me $100 for an advertisement.

I couldn’t believe someone would pay me $100 to advertise on my site! 

While it wasn’t a lot of money, especially considering the amount of time and work I put towards my blog in those 6 months, it was very motivating to see that something I loved doing could actually make money.

After that first $100, I started doing a lot of research on how to monetize a blog, and my blogging income quickly grew from there.

One year after I started my blog, I was earning around $1,000 a month, and I was making around $10,000 monthly two years after I started Making Sense of Cents.

My income only continued to grow, and I am still earning a healthy income from this website today.

Start with a plan for your blog

Sure, you can start on a whim, and that’s kind of what I did, haha.

But, I do think that creating a plan is a good idea if you want to learn how to monetize a blog. This can help you get an organized start, identify your blog’s niche, decide on your blogging goals, find opportunities for blogging income, and more.

It wasn’t until 2015 that I finally created a blogging plan (that’s 4 years after I started!), and my blog income grew significantly after that.

I credit that growth to creating a plan!

Having a plan would have been a huge help in the beginning, and I wish I would have started with one. I probably missed some income opportunities because I had no real plan or direction in the first couple of years. 

Since creating a blogging plan, I became more focused on goals and motivated toward improving and building Making Sense of Cents.

Here are some questions that you may want to ask yourself when creating a plan for your blog:

  • What will you write about on your blog? What will your overall topic be? Money, your life, food, travel, entertainment, education, etc.?
  • How do you want to make money with your blog?
  • What will you do to reach readers on your blog?
  • What are your goals for your blog?

Thinking about, researching, and answering these questions will help guide you on your journey and help you decide what to do next.

 

Write high-quality and engaging blog posts

Your blog’s content is extremely important. This will be what attracts your readers, has them coming back for more, earns you blogging income, and more.

Now, you don’t need to be an expert or need a degree to start talking about a subject, but you do need to be knowledgeable or interested in what you are talking about. And, always be truthful! This will show in your writing and actually help your readers.

To write high-quality content on your blog, here are some tips:

  • Figure out exactly what it is that you’d like to write about and why you think the content is important. Being passionate about a subject will give you the motivation to write content that people want to read. Just think about it: If you don’t enjoy writing your content, then why should you expect someone else to want to read it?
  • Ask your audience what they want you to write about. Many of my best ideas come from expanding on reader questions.
  • Research your blog topics by reading news articles, going to a library, searching for statistics and interesting facts, and more. 
  • If your blog posts are more personal in nature, then dig deep and share your thoughts, and be personable in your writing – your readers want to hear your story!
  • Write long, helpful content. Sure, some great content may only be a few hundred words, but to be as helpful as possible, long content is usually the best. My content is usually over 2,000 words, and this article is around 5,000. Now, you don’t want to just write a lot of fluff content in order to get more words in – you want to actually be helpful!
  • Reread your content. I used to read my content 10 times or more before I would publish it. Now, I have an editor who makes sure I’m always publishing high-quality content.

 

Network, network, network

If you want to learn how to monetize a blog, then networking can be extremely helpful.

Networking can mean:

  • Making friends with other bloggers
  • Attending blogging conferences
  • Sharing content that other bloggers have written
  • Following other bloggers in your niche on social media
  • Signing up for other bloggers’ newsletters
  • Joining blogging groups on Facebook

Some bloggers don’t do any of these things and purely see other bloggers as competition. I don’t believe this is the correct way to approach blogging because you will hold yourself back immensely!

Networking is important because it can help you enjoy blogging (friends are nice to have, right?!), teach you new ideas (such as how to make money blogging or how to grow a blog), make valuable connections, and more.

Keep in mind that networking is even how I earned my very first $100 blogging. My blogging friend connected me with an advertiser, which helped changed my blogging journey.

I have learned a lot about blogging from the blogging community, and the people I’ve connected with have been a tremendous support as I’ve grown my blog.

 

Be prepared to put in a lot of hard work

Starting a blog is relatively easy. But, growing and learning how to monetize a blog takes a lot of work. 

You’ll have to:

  • Start a blog, design it, create social media accounts, and more
  • Write high-quality blog posts
  • Attract an audience of readers
  • Monetize your blog
  • Continue learning about blogging
  • And more

Even when I was just a new blogger and had no plans of making money blogging, I was still spending well over 10 hours a week on Making Sense of Cents.

When I was working my full-time day job and earning an income from my blog, I was working around 40-50 hours a week on my blog on top of my day job!

Now that I blog full-time, my hours vary. Some months I hardly work, and there are other months that I may work 100 hours a week.

It’s not easy, and there’s always something that needs to be done.

But, I absolutely love blogging, which makes the hard work a little less tough. 

 

How to monetize a blog: 4 different ways

There are many different ways you can monetize your blog, including:

  • Affiliate marketing
  • Advertisements and sponsorships
  • Display advertising
  • Create your own product, such as an ebook, course, physical or online products, and more

You could choose to monetize your blog using all of these methods, or even just one. It’s just a personal decision.

For me, I like to be diversified and monetize in many ways, so I do them all.

Below, I am going to dive a little deeper into each way to make money blogging.

Here's how to make money blogging and how I've built a $1,000,000 blog. I have earned over $1,500,000 with my blog and around $979,000 in just 2016 alone.

1. Affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing can be a great way to make money blogging because if there is a product or company that you enjoy, all you have to do is review the product and share a unique affiliate link where your readers can sign up or make a purchase. 

In fact, this is my favorite way to monetize a blog. I enjoy it because it can be quite passive – I can create just one blog post and potentially earn an income from it years later. This is because even though a blog post may be older, I am still constantly driving traffic to it and readers are still purchasing through my affiliate links.

Affiliate marketing is a blog monetization method where you share a link to a product or company with your readers in an attempt to make an income from followers purchasing the product through your link. 

Here are some quick tips so that you can make affiliate income on your blog:

  • Use the Pretty Link plugin to clean up messy-looking affiliate links. I use this for nearly all of my affiliate links because something like “makingsenseofcents.com/bluehost” looks much better than the long, crazy-looking links that affiliate programs usually give you.
  • Provide real reviews. You should always be honest with your reviews. If there is something you don’t like about a product, either don’t review the product at all or mention the negatives in your review.
  • Ask for a commission increase. If you are doing well with a particular affiliate program, ask to increase your commissions.
  • Build a relationship with your affiliate manager. Your affiliate manager can supply your readers with valuable coupons, commission increases, bonuses, and more.
  • Write tutorials. Readers want to know how they can use a product. Showing them how to use it, how it can benefit them, and more are all very helpful.
  • Don’t go overboard. There is no need to include an affiliate link 1,000 times in a blog post. Include them at the beginning, middle, and end, and readers will notice it. Perhaps bold it or find another way for it to stand out as well.

2. Advertisements and sponsorships

Advertising on a blog is one of the first ways that bloggers learn how to monetize a blog. In fact, it’s exactly how I started!

This form of blogging income is when you directly partner with a company and advertise for them on your website or social media accounts.

You may be writing a review for them, a tutorial, talking about their product or company, taking pictures, and so on.

3. Display advertising

Display advertising is one of the easiest ways to make money blogging, but it most likely won’t earn you the most, especially in the beginning.

I’m sure you’ve seen display ads before. They may be on the sidebar, at the top of a post, within a blog post, and so on.

The ads are automatically added when you join an advertising network, and you do not need to manually add these ads to your blog.

Your display advertising income increases or decreases almost entirely based on your page views, and once you place the advertisement, there’s no direct work to be done.

If you want to learn how to monetize a blog through display advertising, then some popular networks include Adsense, MediaVine, and AdThrive.

Personally, I use AdThrive for my display advertising network. I don’t have many display advertisements on my blog, but it is easy income.

4. Sell your own products

Another popular way to monetize a blog is to create a sell your own products. 

This could be an online product, something that you ship, and so on, such as:

  • An online course
  • A coaching program
  • An eBook
  • Printables
  • Memberships
  • Clothing, candles, artwork, hard copy books, and anything else you can think of

And the list goes on and on. I have seen bloggers be very successful in selling all kinds of things on their blogs.

What’s great about selling your own product is that you are in complete control of what you are selling, and your income is virtually unlimited in many cases.

I launched my first product about 5 years after I created Making Sense of Cents, which was a blogging course called Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing. I regret not creating something sooner because this has been an excellent source of income and has helped many people along the way.

 

Have an email list

If you really want to learn how to monetize a blog, I recommend that you start an email list from the very beginning.

I waited several years to start my email list, and that was a huge mistake!

Here’s why you need an email list right away:

  • Your newsletter is YOURS. Unlike social media sites, your newsletter and email subscribers are all yours, and you have their undivided attention. You don’t have to worry about algorithms not displaying your content to readers, and this is because they are your email subscribers. You aren’t fighting with anyone else to have them see your content.
  • The money is in your email list. I believe that email newsletters are the best way to promote an affiliate product. Your email subscribers signed up to hear what YOU have to write about, so you clearly have their full attention. Your email list, over any other promotional strategy, will almost always lead to more income and sales.
  • Your email subscribers are loyal to you. If someone is allowing you to show up in their inbox whenever you want, then they probably trust what you have to say and enjoy listening to you. This is a great way to grow an audience and a loyal one at that.
  • Email is a great way to deliver other forms of content. With Convertkit, I am able to easily create free email courses that are automatically sent to my subscribers. Once a reader signs up, Convertkit sends out all the information they need in whatever time frame I choose to deliver the content.

 

Attract readers

As a new blogger, you’ll want to find ways to attract a readership to your blog and your article.

No, you don’t need millions and millions of page views to earn a good living from blogging. In fact, I know some bloggers who receive 1,000,000 page views yet make less money than those with 100,000 monthly page views.

Every website is different, but once you learn what your audience wants, you can start to really make money blogging, regardless of how many page views you receive.

Having a successful blog is all about having a loyal audience and helping them with your content.

Even with all of that being said, if you want to learn how to monetize a blog, learning how to improve your traffic is valuable. The more loyal and engaged followers you have, the more money you may be able to make through your blog.

There are many ways to grow your readership, such as:

  • Write high-quality articles. Your blog posts should always be high-quality and helpful, and it means readers will want to come back for more.
  • Find social media sites to be active on. There are many social media platforms you can be active on, such as Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Youtube, and others.
  • Regularly share new posts. For most blogs, you should publish content at least once a week. Readers may forget about you if you go for weeks or months at a time without a blog post.
  • Guest post. Guest posting is a great way to reach a new audience, as it can bring new readers to your blog who will potentially subscribe to it. 
  • Make sure it’s easy to share your content. I love sharing posts on social media. However, it gets frustrating when some blogs make it more difficult than it needs to be. You should always make sure it’s easy for readers to share your content, which means your social media icons should be easy to find, all of the info input and ready for sharing (title, link, and your username tagged), and so on. Also, you should make sure that when someone clicks on one of your sharing icons the title isn’t in CAPS (I’ve seen this too many times!). 
  • Write better titles. The title of your post can either bring readers to you or deter them from clicking over. A great free tool to write better headlines is CoSchedule’s Headline tool.
  • Apply SEO strategies. SEO (search engine optimization) is not something I can teach in this small section, but I go over it below in another section.
  • Have a clean and user-friendly blog design. If you want more page views, you should make it as easy as possible for readers to navigate your blog. It should be easy for readers to find your blog homepage, search bar, blog posts, and so on.

  • Pinterest Pin Templates: If you want to make beautiful eye-catching pins, I recommend checking out these pin templates. I recently started using them and they look very nice, plus they are easy to use.
  • Six Figure Blogger: This is more of an advanced and complete blogging course, but it has many actionable strategies that you can apply to your blog right away. This course will teach you how to earn over $100,000 from your blog.
  • Blog By Number: This is a very popular beginner blogging course that takes a step-by-step approach to covering topics like how to start your own blog, blog post templates, and launching your blog.
  • Traffic Transformation: 21 Strategies I Used to Increase My Monthly Page Views from 17,000 to 400,000+ in 10 Months is a great guide full of actionable strategies that you can put into place on your blog right away so that you can learn how to increase your blog’s page views. Grow through SEO

SEO (search engine optimization) is how you get organic search traffic to your blog. 

When you search a phrase on Google, you’ll see a bunch of different websites as the results. This is the result of these websites applying SEO strategies to their blog.

This is a great way for readers to find your blog, and SEO is important to pay attention to as you learn how to monetize a blog!

Below are some of my favorite SEO resources:

  • Stupid Simple SEO: This is my favorite overall SEO course, and one of the most popular for bloggers. I highly recommend taking it. I have gone through the whole course, and I constantly refer back to it.
  • Easy On-Page SEO: This is an easy-to-follow approach to learning on-page SEO so your articles can rank on Google. I have read this ebook twice, and it is super helpful.
  • Easy Backlinks for SEO: This ebook will show you 31 different ways to build backlinks, which are needed for SEO.
  • How To Get 50,000 Pageviews per Month With Keyword Research: This ebook shares the steps for keyword research so that you can get SEO traffic to your website.

 

Use quality photos on your blog

Putting pictures in your content is important.

Images can help you explain your story better and break up the text to make your articles easier to read.

Now, you can’t just do a Google image search and use the pictures you find, and the same goes for images and pictures you find on Pinterest. Doing those things may get you in trouble with the person who owns the photos. Similar to how you wouldn’t want someone to copy and paste a blog post of yours, you shouldn’t take photos without permission.

Currently, I source the pictures I use from three main areas:

  1. My own photos. These are usually found in my travel-related content and on Instagram. I use both my cell phone and my super old DSLR for pictures. Photography is an area that I’m still looking to improve, so I mainly use the following option for the majority of the pictures I publish directly on Making Sense of Cents.
  2. Ivory Mix. I absolutely love IvoryMix. They have great stock photos that fit perfectly with the vibe of Making Sense of Cents. They add many, many photos each month, and you can use them on your blog, social media, and more. Plus, Ivory Mix comes with unlimited download access. I also recently found Qolorfix, and I love how bright and eye-catching these photos are.
  3. DepositPhotos. DepositPhotos is an affordable place to purchase photos. They usually have a deal for around 50 or 100 photos, and it’s one of the places I purchase photos from.

How many views do you need to monetize a blog?

The amount of page views needed to make money blogging varies, and there is no magic number that you should be aiming for.

This is because it depends on so many factors, such as how you will monetize your blog, your niche, the number of email subscribers you have, the quality of your website, and more.

You may see success with 10,000 page views a month, or you may see success with over 100,000 page views a month. It simply depends on the factors above.

 

How do beginner bloggers make money?

Beginner bloggers can make money in many different ways, such as display advertising, affiliate marketing, creating their own products, and sponsorships.

You can start any of these right from the very beginning.

Display advertising is usually the easiest way to begin monetizing a blog, but the payoff is not very high, especially in the beginning when your page views are not high.

 

How many posts should I have before I launch my blog?

I recommend just launching your blog as soon as you have one blog post and a design. Building a huge backlog of blog posts isn’t usually needed, and it can prevent you from ever getting started!

 

How many times a week should I post on my blog?

The more blog posts you have, then the more traffic you may get. That’s because it’s more opportunities to show up in Google searches or share your posts on social media.

I recommend publishing a new blog post at least once a week. Anything less isn’t advised.

Publishing blog posts consistently is smart because readers know to expect regular content from you.

For me, I started my blog by publishing Monday through Friday, once a day. I found that to be way too much for me, though, and I now simply publish blog posts 1 to 2 times a week.

 

Why do bloggers fail?

Bloggers fail for many different reasons. These reasons may include:

  • Giving up too soon. It takes time to make money blogging, and sadly, many people give up just a few months into starting a blog.
  • Not publishing consistently. I recommend publishing content at least once a week, as described in the previous section. Some new bloggers may go months without publishing, and this will take them much longer to make money blogging as they are simply not dedicating enough time to their blog.
  • Not spending enough time learning about blogging. Blogging is not as easy as you may think. There is a lot to learn in order to make it work. You may need to learn about how to grow your blog’s traffic, how to monetize a blog, how to write high-quality content, and more.
  • Not having your own domain and self-hosting. If you want to make money blogging, I highly recommend owning your domain name and being self-hosted. The longer you put this easy step off, the longer it will most likely take for you to make money blogging. You can learn more at How To Start a WordPress Blog.

Hi there, I’m Lakinya from Miami, Florida. My background is quite simple, I went to college in Tampa FL at USF (University of South Florida) upon graduating I moved back home and was a middle and high school teacher for 4 years. I decided to switch gears and land a more secure job with the State government. This is when I got the urge to find something on the side to do!

I did research on many things that were realistic to get started, affordable and wouldn’t compromise my day job. I discovered vending in 2016, vending wasn’t a popular topic at the time. Therefore, I literally just decided one day to purchase some machines and go from there.

Of course, when starting something with no knowledge or guidance you’re then forced to learn from your mistakes.

I started with five used vending machines located at a large manufacturer that produces tile and a mechanic shop located in Downtown Miami. I sold these machines off with the location included after two years. I was able to sell the machines with the location for $2,000 more than what I initially paid for them.

After that, there was a time when I didn’t have any machines until I saw the groundbreaking in my local city of a new entertainment district. This center would be a movie theater, bowling alley, restaurants, family entertainment with indoor amusements.

I did my research and found the project manager and pitched my vending services and just like that I landed this great deal with eight machines. Since this was a large investment up front, I partnered with a family member to help with cost and allow him to maintain the location.

This location consists of a great deal of teenagers every weekend and families of course so it’s always packed with people, these machines generate on average $7,000 to $10,000 a month.

With vending it’s all about having the right location! The key is finding a location where there are always people.

In the next few months, we are looking to maneuver into specialty vending. This is where you can really generate massive opportunities in vending. My brother is an active fisherman and came up with the idea of placing live bait and tackle vending machines throughout Key West, Florida. This is something we are currently working on, of course finding a location is the most important part.

My end goal is to fully transition from snacks and drinks and focus on live bait and tackle vending machines in Key West and other prime fishing locations in South Florida.

What do you like about having a vending machine business?

Having a vending machine is what I like to call a safe investment.

Why? Because people will always eat and drink.

It’s not 100% passive but the best part of a vending machine business is that the machine is your employee! You don’t have to worry about anyone calling out or any of the traditional concerns with having employees.

Vending is a billion-dollar business and will continue to grow, especially with all the automated and contactless features that vending machines have to offer.

Is there room for new people to have a vending machine business in 2022?

Take a moment to think about where you live. Cities are continuing to develop more and more each year.

This means, more schools, more hotels, more shopping plazas, and the list goes on.

Yes, there is room for new people in the vending machine business.

How much does the average vending machine make in a day? How much does a vending machine make a month?

When it comes to how much you can make from a vending machine, the first thing to consider is the machine placed in a location with enough foot traffic.

If the machine is in a location that has good foot traffic you should make between $500 to $600 a month. That’s average.

There are some locations that can produce that weekly. It’s all about foot traffic where the machine is located.

How profitable is owning a vending machine?

You can literally make thousands a month with vending machines selling the right products in the right location!

What type of vending machines make the most money?

When people think of vending machines they often think of snacks and drinks. While this traditional type of vending is always going to be around there are many other options to really tap into some good money.

Imagine this, you’re on vacation on South Beach and you forgot your flat iron. The first thought would be to find a beauty supply store and purchase one. However, what if the hotel had a beauty supply vending machine? Selling items such as flat irons, hair extensions, combs, brushes, hair gel etc. You would just purchase from the machine, right? Now, think about how hotels in certain cities are always occupied like Miami Beach. You could easily make at least $1,500 a month from one beauty supply vending machine.

Another ideal place to put a beauty supply vending machine is on a college campus in the dormitories. You could even add beauty supply items for males. Think about the number of students that don’t have cars.

Some other options can be laundry products, live bait and tackle, CBD, school supplies and so much more.

How much does the average vending machine cost? Where do you buy a vending machine?

Vending machine prices do vary, depending on if you want a refurbished machine or brand new.

Do you want it to have a credit card reader on it or not?

Let’s say you want to sell beauty products from a machine. You can get a used snack machine and add a credit card reader on it for about $2,000.

Now if you want to brand your machine with your logo or brand colors add an additional $500 to that.

If you want a brand-new machine with all the bells and whistles that will cost you about $5,000 including a credit card reader installed.

Where is the best place to put vending machines?

Anywhere there are people!

Office buildings, apartment complexes, laundromats, churches, summer camps, boys and girls clubs, schools, doctors’ offices, break rooms of businesses with at least 50 plus employees.

The name of the game in vending is foot traffic.

What is your typical work schedule? How many hours does it take each week to run a vending machine business?

Most people that own vending machines have 9 to 5’s and this is a side hustle. The great part about it is that it can be maintained with just a few hours weekly.

Example, to maintain five machines in two separate locations would take a total of about 2 to 3 hours. That’s traveling to the locations and stocking the machines.

Something to consider when looking for a location is, does this location work with your work schedule. So, if you work from 9 to 5 and the location operations are 8 to 6 this might not be a location that is compatible, unless you have someone to help you stock the machines.

What are the negatives of owning a vending machine business?

Vending can be fun, but it is also work.

You must consider your schedule and ask yourself, if you have the time to go and stock a machine weekly? Sometimes, you put forth effort to place your machine into a location and it underperforms.

This means you aren’t making the money you expected to.

In a situation like this, you will need to find another location for the machine.

Depending on where the machine is located it may be a high risk for vandalism. Although it’s not a common thing it does happen. But that is what insurance is for.

Another con is that you may have to share a portion of your profits if the location asks. Some places you will have to pay rent, such as a mall.

Vending machines make money from day one, but it does take some time to make your investment back. Realistically, it can take six months to a year.

Overall, the vending machine business is like any other business with the right location and proper preparation you can have success.

Can you list the steps needed to get started with a vending machine business?

The first thing would be to determine what type of vending you want to get started with.

Then based on that type of vending you want to focus on securing a location that is aligned with that type of vending.

The most important part of the business is putting a machine in a location that has high foot traffic.

You will also need to determine what products you will sell and where you will buy them from.

Don’t wait for the opportunity, create the opportunity.

Vending can fit into anyone’s lifestyle regardless of age, economic status or location. If this business model interests you, the biggest tip would be to start looking at potential locations to place a vending machine.

How I’ve Traveled Full Time For 20 Years (And Make/Save Money)

Today, I have a great guest post to share from Patrick Schulte from Bumfuzzle. Patrick quit his job around 20 years ago and has been traveling full-time ever since. He and his wife have circumnavigated the world by boat, and have also driven from Alaska to Argentina to Europe in a 1958 VW van. Here is how they made it happen. Life was much simpler when I was content with living the American Dream. 

I walked to work from my downtown Chicago condo, traded commodities for a few hours, came home, walked up the street to pick my wife up from her job, walked to a restaurant, walked home, watched tv, went to bed. On the weekends we might take in a Blackhawks game.

That was life.

Relaxing, easy, and comfortable.

We had plenty of money, a nice home, a convertible, didn’t want for anything, and we were still in our twenties. 

We should have considered ourselves lucky, had a baby, and moved to the suburbs. That would have been the appropriate next step. Throw in a white picket fence and we would have completed the package.

Instead, within just a few months, we were floating at anchor on a 35’ catamaran in the Bahamas.

It was the kind of dramatic left turn that makes the car’s passenger door fly open in the movies.

My wife and I had decided that we needed an adventure in our life. We gathered up our savings, sold all of our belongings, bought a boat, and set off to sail around the world. 

Financially this didn’t make a lot of sense, especially twenty years ago when being a digital nomad was nigh impossible.

But we were young, had no debt, and were loaded with confidence. We figured we’d pick up right where we left off, but four years older and with loads of great stories.

We did get older, and we did rack up lots of stories, but we also decided somewhere along the way that we would never go back to the American Dream. We’d been away from that lifestyle for four years, we’d visited 40 countries, met people from every single point on the personal finance spectrum between $1 and $1 Billion, and returning to our old life no longer held any interest.

That, however, left a gaping hole in our original plan of going back to work in Chicago and starting fresh.

Fortunately, I had been a self-employed commodities trader, and in the past few years, while we were off galavanting around the world, everyone else had been working overtime to turn just about everything into an online job, trading included.

We’ve now been full-time world travelers for twenty years.

In addition to sailing around the world, we’ve driven around much of it. We’ve lived in a handful of different vintage vehicles, and are currently anchored in Aruba aboard our third boat.

Along the way I’ve earned a living through stock trading, as well as writing two books, and starting an online investing business to teach others who are interested in living a similar lifestyle.

How did we do it?

Track Your Spending

I’m not the first to say this, and I certainly won’t be the last. But it’s so important, and yet so rarely done, that it bears repeating. It is impossible to make positive financial progress without knowing, in detail, what is in the negative column.

For many years my wife carried a small notebook with her everywhere we went. She wrote down everything we spent, and I do mean everything. We could be in a market in Eritrea, buy ten cents worth of fruit, and she’d whip that book out to note it. 

I know most people will find that level of tracking to be too much, and maybe it is a bit too extreme, but after doing that for years we never once had to look at our finances and wonder how the balance fell that month. If there was an anomaly, we knew about it, and we could adjust accordingly. Over time we could estimate our monthly expenses for things like food and entertainment almost to the penny before we’d even gone through the book for that month. 

By knowing where your money is going, you can make changes that can make a significant difference. Those differences might not be obvious on a daily basis, but when multiplied by a month, or a year, the amounts can be staggering. 

In my book, Live on the Margin, I talked about “extending the burn.” Making changes to your spending habits can easily stretch the finances for a one-year trip into an eighteen-month trip, without any discernible hit to your level of enjoyment.

Start Investing…Yesterday

The stock market can be a scary place for a lot of people, and that keeps them from reaping its benefits.

According to a Gallup poll, in 2021 just 56% of Americans owned stock of some kind, whether through individual investments, or retirement accounts like a 401k or an IRA. That number is down from nearly 67% in 2002.

Many people left the stock market during the Great Recession, and haven’t returned, to their detriment.

Meanwhile, the wealthiest 10% of Americans own 89% of the stock.

Wealth, like it or not, is directly tied to participation in the stock market. It’s imperative to your financial well-being that you are investing.

The earlier you start investing, the better. The stock market always has, and always will, go through periods of boom and bust, but on the whole it has always ended higher. Putting time on your side will make creating and holding onto your wealth that much easier.

To that end, I opened accounts in my kids’ names at a young age. I make regular contributions to it, and sit down with them regularly to pick new stocks, discuss their holdings, explain different investing concepts, economics, and myriad other financial topics that will help them in their adult life.

While sailing around the world it was my passive investments that supported our travels. During that time the stock market increased roughly 50%. My savings grew just about every day.

Even if the principal declined—due to the spending being done to finance our travel—at least the remaining principal wasn’t stagnant.

A checking or savings account simply isn’t going to keep up. 

Build First, Before Getting Aggressive

After sailing around the world we returned eager for more adventure. We restored a 1958 VW bus and set off to travel around the world, again.

We lived in that bus for the next two years as we drove from Alaska in the north, to Argentina in the south, and then all over Europe. 

Our passive investments had done well for us while we were out sailing, but now on land, with more ready access to the internet, it was beneficial to be a bit more aggressive. Being a lifelong professional trader allowed me to do that, but it’s not the right choice for everyone.

Recently, coinciding closely with the popularity of cryptocurrency, online trading forums, and no-fee stock trading apps, there has been an explosion in small trading account holders. The most widely known is probably Robinhood.

Generally speaking, the increase in new brokerage accounts is a good thing. However, a closer look shows the median account size of a Robinhood user is just $240. If this number begins to grow significantly in the years to come, that will be great, because it will indicate that these new users are focused on their future wealth.

However, numbers suggest otherwise so far.

According to the Federal Reserve, Americans in the top 10% saw their stock market investments grow 43% between January 2020 and June 2021, while the bottom 90% saw their wealth grow at a much lower 33%. Not surprisingly, Robinhood users are some of the most active in the market. Their lower returns then reflect that.

33% is still good growth, but the wealth disparity continues to grow.

I suggest that those new to stock market investing work on buy-and-hold growth strategies early on. A reasonable target is a $20,000 portfolio before deciding whether or not they want to become more aggressive with their investing.

In addition to building up some wealth, investors need to really be sure they are comfortable, or even good at, trading more aggressively with a portion of their money. If you are new to trading, I highly suggest you search out a sort of mentorship from a professional.

Share Your Knowledge

During the VW bus adventure my wife became pregnant with our first child. We confirmed this with a pregnancy test purchased in Rio de Janeiro, and taken on a cargo ship in the Atlantic Ocean while en route to Europe, with our VW bus in the cargo hold.

After a few months of driving around Europe we decided to sell our bus in England and head back to the States. There, we picked up our ‘65 Porsche (long story, family heirloom) from storage, threw a couple of bags in the back, and drove to Mexico to find a nice beach spot to have a baby.

We meandered south along the Pacific Coast, now eight months pregnant, and stopped in Puerto Vallarta. There we found a nice doctor, a sparkly new hospital, and a spot on the beach to relax and settle into life as a family of three.

It was during our early years in Mexico that I began exploring alternative income streams. 

I found that the easiest way to do that is to take what you are already an expert at, and use that to teach others how to also become an expert. 

We’re all good at something.

You have something in your life that you consider yourself an expert at. It may be something very broad, or something very niche, but whatever it is you have spent a lot of time becoming good at it. Share that knowledge.

For me, that knowledge is trading stocks. It’s what I studied in college, and the one thing I’ve ever really done to earn money as an adult. I’ve spent tens of thousands of hours working on it. 

Others might be experts in speaking a second language, welding, computer programming, or a million other things.

Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, take what you’ve spent years developing as a skill and convert that into an online business. 

Second language? Online tutoring. Welding? Online video courses. Computer programming? Freelancing.

The list goes on.

It might take some imagination, and some skills will be more profitable than others, but there is likely a way to take your knowledge on the road with you, share it with others, and get paid for it.

I self-published a couple of books. I’d already gathered a pretty good online following through my travel blog, bumfuzzle.com, and it wasn’t a stretch to write a book about sailing around the world.

After that book I focused on teaching more about trading stocks, and working that into a life of travel and adventure. Live on the Margin specifically targeted an audience that wanted to live the lifestyle I was already living. Again, sell your knowledge.

That book sparked even more questions to my inbox. My goal the past few years had been not to work (in any sort of traditional sense) until my children were five. Now that we’d reached that and I had a little more time available, I decided to branch out a bit and offer to teach individuals how to trade, from start to finish.

Over the next couple of years that business grew into what it is today. At Wanderer Financial I teach people how to invest so they can become financially independent and live freely. My subscribers get a daily live chat full of others who are either out living their wandering life already, or are striving to get there. We discuss stocks, travel, and financial independence. I send out trade alerts whenever I make a trade personally, I teach how to trade stocks and options, send out a weekly market recap newsletter, and much more. 

I wake in the mornings, spend an hour looking over the news and going through charts, then open up my Basecamp daily chat where we spend some time throughout the morning discussing the markets and looking for trading opportunities.

After just a few hours I’m done for the day and off to jump in the water with my kids, or go explore whatever island I’m anchored off of. My business is a perfect addition to the work I would already be doing for myself. Now, instead of trading alone, I trade with a group of others who are paying me to share my knowledge.

In addition, I do all of this from a boat in some of the most beautiful places in the world.

Wants vs. Needs

Before having kids people would constantly say to us, “Have fun now, because it’s all over once you have kids.” They’d follow that up with a chuckle and sad vacant eyes.

I understand they were well meaning, and based on their own experiences that had been the case, but we were determined to have a different experience raising kids.

According to a 2015 USDA study, adjusting for inflation, new parents in 2022 can expect a child to cost roughly $300,000 by the time they reach eighteen. 

This number is wildly inflated by lifestyle choices. For example, housing a child accounts for roughly one-third of that number. 

We chose to raise our children on boats and motorhomes, traveling and experiencing the world around us, with the focus on the outdoor lifestyle that those “housing” choices present. 

Our kids have always shared a room. Something which was perfectly normal up until just a generation ago. Hardly a Baby Boomer in America didn’t share a bedroom in their childhood. Suddenly, despite shrinking family size, home square footage has exploded and individual bedrooms are considered an absolute must. 

Strike housing cost off of the list for our family. 

For us it comes down to recognizing, and acknowledging, the difference between a want and a need. That difference is significant.

For example, individual bedrooms is a want, not a need. It’s a lifestyle choice. So are most things in life. Eating is a need, eating out is a want. A new car is usually a want, not a need. A new toy is a want, not a need. The list is endless.

One thing I have done for years, and continue to do today, is to not buy anything without wanting it at least three times.

This is a great way to eliminate the spontaneous spending in your life. It doesn’t make that want suddenly turn into a need, but it at least forces you through a process of thinking through the purchase.

My children are twelve and ten years old.

They are world travelers who have never lived in a traditional home on land.

They call a boat their home. They speak two languages. They’ve never been to formal school. They were swimming by two and scuba diving by nine. They could pack all their belongings in a suitcase. They are kind, and they are best friends.

Again, everyone is different, and the choices I’ve made won’t fit everyone, but the point is to recognize that there are alternatives. The digital nomad lifestyle affords many opportunities that might not be obvious when plugging away at the formally recognized American Dream.

Recognize the difference between wants and needs, and then adjust your life accordingly in order to achieve your own dream.

Living the Life That You Truly Want

For the last twenty years I feel like I’ve done that.

I’ve traveled to 70 countries while bringing my home with me (boat, VW bus, motorhome). I’ve answered to nobody during that time.

I feel like I’ve raised two good young people, I have a great marriage, success in business,  and have truly lived my dreams. 

Much of this is due to the lifestyle choices I’ve made, and much of it is due to the opportunities we all have these days thanks to the internet, and the ability to work from anywhere. 

The things I’ve listed above are what I consider to be the building blocks that have given me this lifestyle, and I hope that others will find value in them and find them useful in forming their own choices in order to build the life they want.

You will want to explain to the hiring manager how the tasks can be done from home. I also recommend sharing your past remote work experience if you have any. This will show the company that you can effectively and efficiently work from home.
  • Give the company a proposal. In this proposal, you can lay out what your work hours will be like, when and how you’ll communicate with your company, how meetings will work, and more. Basically, offer solutions to any concerns your company may have about you working remotely.
